Perhaps Apple Mail has a form of Autodiscovery? Removing the account information from Apple Mail resolved the issue. Even though the Mail app was not running, it was still trying to authenticate to the server every hour. This user had used Apple Mail in the past (it has been a couple of years), and the account information was still in Apple Mail. Outlook Autodiscovery generated a single failure every hour and fifteen minutes. I noticed that there were 2 security failures at the same time for this user, repeating every hour.

One interesting note - I had a user that I converted to 2FA, and started seeing a password failure in the security log even though I had run the applescript. The applescript to disable Autodiscovery has resolved the password problems with Outlook for Mac.

UPDATE 6/2/22: I have implemented 2FA for 80% of our users. Personally I'm not too concerned about disabling AutoDiscovery, but is this a Microsoft issue or a Kerio issue?

Does Outlook for Windows have the same issue? Or are Outlook for Windows users disabling AutoDiscovery? I'm assuming that for whatever reason the Outlook AutoDiscovery must appear to be a different program from Outlook, so it fails when presenting the application password to Kerio. I will also move forward with converting more users to 2FA. I will continue to monitor and report back if I see any issues. Since running the script over 24 hours ago, zero invalid password entries in the Kerio security log, zero reports of the pop-up in Outlook that the password is wrong.

I found an article on how to disable AutoDiscovery for Mac ( discovery-for-microsoft-office-for-mac) and ran the applescript on the 3 Macs with 2FA enabled. Every time there was a password failure, there were also AutoDiscovery entries in the Outlook log. UPDATE & FIX 5/3/22: after reviewing the Outlook logs and comparing to the invalid password entries in the security log, it looks like the issue is AutoDiscovery.

I have enabled logging in Outlook to see if I can see an event that occurs at the same time as the invalid password attempts in the server logs. Only seeing issues with the 2FA enabled account.
